Pacemakers and ICDs need checking regularly. If it has been recently implanted, it should be checked a month or two afterwards. After this, six monthly or annual checks are adequate, but should also be undertaken if there is any concern that the pacemaker or ICD is not working correctly.
A pacemaker or ICD check-up lasts between 15 and 30 minutes. A programmer is placed near the pacemaker and downloads data from the pacemaker or ICD. A series of checks are performed to ensure it is set up optimally. Sometime the check will identify other issues that need treatment with medications such as beta-blockers or anticoagulants (blood thinners). The battery of the pacemaker or ICD will also be checked to give an idea of when it may need replacing.
