These devices are designed to record the heart rhythm when symptoms occur in order to reach a diagnosis.
They are generally used when symptoms of palpitations or dizziness are intermittent. There are different models available and either involve holding a device to the skin of the chest during symptoms, or alternatively having ECG stickers and leads attached to the chest and pressing a button on the device during symptoms.
At the end of the monitoring period a physiologist and your doctor will review the traces to try and identify what the cause of your symptoms is.
If your symptoms are frequent (occur within a 24-hour period) then a 24-hour ECG may be a better choice. If your symptoms are less frequent (eg every month or so or longer) then an implantable loop recorder may be more useful.
An event recorder can be very important in assessing infrequent symptoms. Our expert Consultant Cardiologists are trained in their use and are available for consultation on any day of the week and weekends as well.
