ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (ECG)

What Is An Electrocardiogram?

This is a test that evaluates the electrical activity of your heart and is commonly referred to as an ECG. It can detect problems with the conduction of electricity throughout the heart or rhythm problems such as the heart beating too slow or too fast.  It can also identify damage to the heart that has arisen after a heart attacks.  It may also indicate the likelihood of there being problems with the shape or function of the heart.

What Happens During An ECG Test?

You will be asked to take off the clothing from the upper half of your body, and to wear a gown so that some stickers can be placed on the chest.  The physiologist will also need access to your ankles to put additional stickers there.

The stickers are connected to the ECG machine by thin wires.  The physiologist doing the test will ask you to remain still and breathe normally for 30 seconds or so.  The quality of the trace will be checked by the physiologist and may be repeated until they are happy.

The stickers will then be removed and any gel residue is wiped off. You will be allowed to leave unless the physiologist has any concerns that the ECG needs to be seen by the doctor before you leave.
