An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart and is used to identify problems with the shape, function and valves of the heart. Most patients with suspect heart problems undergo this test which is non-invasive and safe.
An echocardiogram is used to evaluate the function of the heart and visualise the structures including heart muscle, chambers, valves and blood flow to identify any abnormalities. From these images, a number of measurements are made. The vast majority of echocardiograms are transthoracic where the images are taken from outside of the chest, but occasionally a transoesophageal scan may be required where a long thin tube is inserted into the mouth to take pictures from inside the stomach.
Before the echocardiogram, you will be asked to remove the top half of your clothing and put on a gown open at the front. Three sticky pads will be applied to you with wires that connect to the echocardiogram machine so it can pick up your heartbeat. The lights may be turned down so that the physiologist doing the scan can see the images clearly.
For the most part of the scan, you will lie on your left side, while the cardiac physiologist will place a probe coated with gel over different parts of your chest to get a series of images from your ‘echo’ window. You will also lie on your back at some point during the scan, and your doctor might ask you to bend your knees or to hold your breath at some points during the scan. You may hear noises from the machine picking up blood flow.
The duration of the scan is about 30 minutes. Upon completion, your chest will be wiped clean of the gel and you can put your clothes back on. The scan will be analysed by your physiologist and doctor after you’re gone.
An echo requires no special preparation but it is a good idea to go to the toilet before hands. There are no risks of the procedure.
An echocardiogram is an important test for the heart and can identify important problems non-invasively and safely. Our cardiologists are experts in echocardiography and are available for consultation on any day of the week and weekends as well.
