This is a painless and safe way of visualising the main arteries in the neck that supply the brain. It is important in looking for possible causes of stroke, and also looking for narrowings in the arteries caused by cholesterol and calcium deposits. Your doctor may recommend a carotid Doppler scan if you have symptoms that may indicate a stroke or mini-stroke, or there is a need to assess and reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease in the future.
This is an imaging test to look for narrowings or plaques in the carotid arteries which supply the brain. It uses ultrasound which is painless and safe.
The test is simple. You will lie on a couch and face away from the sonographer, who will apply an ultrasound probe to your neck on one side and then the other. They will use cold jelly on the neck to get good images. The scanner makes some noises as the blood flow through the arteries are measured.
Carotid Doppler ultrasound is a useful test to assess neurological symptoms and cardiovascular risk. Our cardiologists are available for consultation on any day of the week and weekends as well.
